Mitsubishi Materials„ new VFX5 series of cutters is a smaller version of the successful VFX6 series. The new cutters are available in sizes from ø40mm to ø80mm, in two lengths - short and standard. The VFX5 series uses the new (small size) XNMU16 carbide inserts with a full range of tip radii from 0.8mm to 5.0mm. The VFX5 series cutters are made from 42CrMo4, a steel that transmits structural strength even when subjected to high loads and temperatures... they feature an innovative through-body cooling system, with nozzles located in the cooling channels to help efficiently remove chips from the cutting area. The insert pockets are designed with a large axial contact area and two more radial contact points in a “V" formation to ensure tight clamping, high repeatability in insert positioning and optimum dispersion of loads. The plates are of the new MP9030 grade with PVD coating, manufactured by a special Ti compound based method. Combined with a special substrate that exhibits a substantial wear balance, the inserts enable a wide range of expansions and low cutting resistance, which is crucial for successful milling of titanium alloys. The geometry of the cutting edge ensures a smooth yet robust and stable cut. Considering the loads borne by the inserts, we will also need a stronger grip, this is provided by the TS450 screw (larger than normal). A torque of 5.0Nm is recommended to tighten the screw. The new inserts are available, also for the VFX6 series with tip radii from 1.2mm to 5.0mm in two different chipbreaking styles - MS and HS for medium and heavy duty applications. User benefits Prior to market launch, the VFX milling cutters, were successfully tested in a variety of industries. They excel in achieving MRR (Metal Removal Rate) of up to 500cm3/min while maintaining acceptably good tool life... this exceeds the expected benchmark of 400cm3/min. High levels of MRR, reliability and long tool life, the benefits to the user, less vibration and reduced overall costs, are not only laboratory proven but also in the real world conditions of the production environment.
